Kaira was born in Downtown San Francisco. She was the only child of Farhah, a single mother who worked multiple jobs to meet the basic household requirements. From a very young age, Kaira saw the dark side of life and gained a sense of wisdom that is often seen only in older adults.

She was only 9 years old when she had her first job. She cleaned the toilets of her neighborhood houses and used the money to buy food every day. Her childhood was laced with adult responsibilities rather than childlike innocence and enthusiasm.

As Kaira grew older, she worked harder to ensure that she and her mother live a decent lifestyle. She saved up for her scholarship and worked night shifts to afford her college. With her hard work and perseverance she finally landed a scholarship at a credible university in California.

Things were finally looking well for Kaira and her mother. She no longer had to work odd jobs, and had a stable household and enough money to meet their needs. Sadly, fate had other plans.

On July 5th, 2010 Kaira and her mother were heading back home in their car. Suddenly, a truck slammed right into them and tossed the car upside down. Since it was a quiet highway, it took some time to get help.

By the time they reached the hospital, Kaira’s mother was declared dead. She had no clue about it. All she remembered was seeing blood oozing out of her mother’s head and soon after that, she lost all consciousness.

Kaira’s entire world changed after that one fateful day. Her mother was the only family she had in the USA, and the only reason for happiness in her life. After her mother’s sudden death, Kaira found it impossible to live alone in California. For 5 years she struggled with dreadful loneliness, feelings of guilt, and bouts of depression.

Then in 2015, Kaira decided to move to India. Her maternal side of the family lived in Mumbai and she thought that it would be best to live with whatever family she had left. So, in 2015 Kaira moved to Mumbai.

In the initial years, she struggled with her finances and her living condition but eventually, she landed a well-paying job in the healthcare industry. Shifting to India proved to be a good decision for Kaira. Emotionally, she felt much better and liked having her family around.

However, Kaira still witnessed phases of insomnia and anxiety attacks.

“Insomnia and depression used to come in phases. Somewhere I had gotten accustomed to it, so I knew that eventually, it will pass away. I should have taken help but at that time I had no awareness about signs of PTSD” says Kaira

In 2022, Kaira suffered another tragic incident. She was traveling to Goa by train, and at the station, a man who was trying to cross the track got hit by the train. She witnessed the entire incident closely and froze completely.

“Everything around me disappeared. It was dead silent. There were people pushing past me, shouting, running here and there but I could not hear a thing. There was just a shrill noise in my ear and I fainted” shares Kaira.

From that day, Kaira succumbed to depression and could no longer pull herself out of it. She experienced panic attacks, flashbacks, and night sweating and was gripped by an unknown fear. Her world was crumbling down and this time she had no energy to fight it back.

One of Kaira’s friends who frequently paid a visit to her house booked online therapy to manage PTSD. On the day of the appointment, she pushed Kaira out of her bed and convinced her to at least talk to the therapist online.

Kaira sat numb and expressionless in front of the laptop. The expert psychologist at Holistic Living managed to crack the wall and encouraged Kaira to open up. The first few sessions of online therapy to manage PTSD were spent in understanding and knowing more about Kaira and her life experiences.

After getting a good understanding of Kaira’s past and present life situation, the expert therapist at Holistic Living conducted an objective assessment of her signs and symptoms. After careful observation, she diagnosed Kaira with PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder.

PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder is a sensitive mental health condition that can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic incident.

People with PTSD may experience symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, avoidance of situations or people that trigger memories of the trauma, hypervigilance, and other symptoms that significantly interfere with their daily lives.

Kaira developed PTSD when her mother passed away. Although the symptoms were present, they were less in intensity, and hence Kaira chose to ignore them. In 2022, when Kaira witnessed another similar tragic incident, the memories of the past came rushing back and the signs of PTSD consumed her whole.

Fortunately, this time she had the help she needed and took her online therapy to manage PTSD regularly.

The online therapy to manage PTSD helped Kaira to identify and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs related to the traumatic event. This encouraged her to develop more positive and realistic ways of thinking about the event, which reduced her symptoms of PTSD.

In the online therapy to manage PTSD, she also learned to confront her fears and process the traumatic event in a less distressing way. Gradually, she could travel in trains and other transportation vehicles without feeling anxious and stressed out.

“What helped me the most was the support I received from my therapist. It was the first time ever I talked openly about the incident with my mother. I burst out crying like a little child. It was embarrassing and relieving at the same time. Online therapy to manage PTSD has worked tremendously for me.

I am grateful for the support and compassion I got from my therapist. It has been life-changing for me” says Kaira.

Kaira completed her online therapy to manage PTSD in January 2023. She was in therapy for almost a year and still takes regular follow-up sessions. It was her persistent efforts and consistency that made her journey successful and inspirational.
