How Hypnotherapy Cured My Insomnia- 2023

Insomnia is a serious sleep disorder but unfortunately, it is glamorized and misunderstood for all the wrong reasons. Insomnia affects your life in many dangerous ways and could even be an indication of something serious. Hence, seeking therapy support is a much-needed step to resolve the disorder.

I used to lie down on my bed like an owl. My eyes were wide open but my mind was incredibly exhausted.

I could hear the ticking of the clock.

I would wait and wait but my sleep had lost its way somewhere and refused to come back at all.

This is what insomnia is. Insomnia is really not a few sleepless nights but months of inability to sleep peacefully and continuously.

I almost always had a difficult time falling asleep but on nights when I could, I would end up waking up multiple times in the middle of the night and not sleeping again.

Insomnia or the inability to sleep can affect your brain in disastrous ways. It can actually change the way your brain is structured.

For me, insomnia had actually ruined my life. The lack of sleep eventually exhausted me physically and mentally. I could not think properly during the day. It was like my mind was always clouded with mist and fog.

I was in autopilot mode because of chronic insomnia. I honestly don’t even know how I completed my graduation because it was during the last months of my graduation that I suffered from insomnia.

Naturally, my grades were pretty average and I had a tough time getting into the college I wanted to. Life was turning into a mess and I had forgotten what it was like to sleep sound fully at night.

I tried medications. I tried meditation. I tried all the tips and tricks on the internet. Nothing seemed to work.

Finally, my therapist suggested hypnotherapy to treat insomnia. I was really at a position where I could literally do anything to sleep for even one night!

Hypnotherapy is a treatment that works on your subconscious mind. It basically says that we have a lot of memories, feelings, and thoughts stored in the subconscious mind that affects us even without our awareness.

Hypnotherapy helps us to become aware of these feelings and thoughts so we can resolve them and treat our issues.

My first session of hypnotherapy to treat insomnia was done online. My therapist was referred to an accredited and qualified professional who has been in the field for more than 24 years.

Her experience was quite evident from the way she made me feel at ease and comfortable over the video call. I had my doubts if this could actually work online but she patiently answered and cleared my doubts.

Then she proceeded with a sort of guided meditation to help me tune into a relaxed state of mind. I must admit that it was the first time in a very long time that my mind felt calm and my body loosened a bit from all the tension.

Hypnotherapy puts you into a trance-like state that allows you to explore your subconscious mind. When I entered that state, I could easily recall certain memories and emotions that I had buried deep within me.

When I was 13 years old, I started experiencing sleep paralysis. It is something where you feel stuck in your sleep like someone is sitting on your chest. You are not able to move and this deep sense of fear and paranoia washes over you.

It was really tough on me, especially because I was only a little kid. My parents even tried demonic possession which scarred me a lot. I remember feeling like something was deeply wrong with me and that I was demonic.

For a little child to think this way it is of course not normal or healthy. I never told this to my parents because I was scared that they would throw me away. So, I suppressed these feelings and eventually forgot about them.

My sleep paralysis was finally treated with medications and eventually passed away. But it led to bigger sleep difficulties.

Until I turned 26 years old, I never experienced sleep paralysis again. But one day when I was sleeping alone in my friend’s house, I again had a similar attack like the one I used to have when I was 13 years old.

I was asleep but I could see myself walking out of the room. I could feel that fear in my heart. I tried so much to snap awake but something held me back and then finally gathering all my courage I woke up.

I freaked out because I could not go through all that mental torture once again and from that day I refused to sleep at night.

That fear of experiencing paralysis again was so deeply set within me that I just refused to sleep at all. I even refused to acknowledge what was happening to me and as days passed, I forgot why I was not sleeping.

It was a crazy phase of my life and something that I had buried in the subconscious. And it all came back to me when I was doing hypnosis.

These painful memories, the intense fear and paranoia, and the anxiety of getting it all again were affecting me without my awareness. They had given rise to my insomnia. In hypnotherapy, I became aware of everything and then my hypnotherapist guided me to release my mind from these traumas. I sleep better now!

Our mind can become a cage that holds us back and stops us from living a truly happy and successful life. I was trapped in my mind and that stopped me from sleeping peacefully at night. My soul was not at peace which naturally affected my body and mind too.

After hypnotherapy, I felt a lot lighter and calm in my head. I learned how to accept and release the fear that was associated with sleeping. The anxiety of anticipating another attack of sleep paralysis was also resolved with regular breathing exercises and meditation.

I still remember that night when I slept continuously. I did not keep waking up in the middle of the night, I had no fear playing on my head and when I woke up in the morning, I felt deeply relaxed and happy.

My moods started improving, I was able to focus better and my life in general just started feeling more positive and joyous.

I really wished I had done hypnotherapy much earlier. I would not have lost so many precious years of my life. However, everything happens for a reason and I am just super grateful that I went for hypnotherapy and it helped me heal from my past trauma and treat my insomnia.
