Below are some ways how you can begin to declutter your life:

  1. Do not start something you do not intend to finish:

Signing up for stuff when you do not intend to complete it, keeps adding to the pile. Think of your priorities and take up tasks in that order. Do not quit halfway. Complete anything and everything that you have signed up for. And before you know it, you will have a lot of stuff ticked off from your list.

  1. Start with small decluttering tasks:

Always start with the easy things. Then move on to the harder stuff. This will help to tick off items in the list quickly and help you gain momentum thus boosting your confidence to declutter.

  1. If it is covered in dust, it must go:

If something is lying on your shelves idle, catching dust, it basically means that you either do not need it anymore or have outgrown it. This may be some book you bought and do not plan to read again, or an old t-shirt, or a pair of shoes you now regret buying. Whatever it might be, it must go. Donating such stuff to the needy is always a good idea.

Backup all your photos, documents, and other important stuff to the cloud. Backing data up not only saves you memory but also ensures that you do not lose any important data. The same rules that apply to your home apply to your phone or pc as well. Delete anything that you have not needed in a while or will not need it in the near future. Now organize all the remaining files and apps according to their use.

Do you also have drawers stashed with bills and receipts like most people? Firstly, trash all the bills and receipts that are not quite important like small supermarket bills. Scan all the others and store them in the cloud. Go digital whenever possible. If your bank has an option of generating e – receipts, always prefer that over the printed ones. Not only the electronic receipts will be easier to look through but also save trees needed to print the receipt papers.

Make a to-do list of all the tasks you are supposed to complete with their deadlines. Stick to this list to avoid distractions and committing to unnecessary work. Look at the list often and think about how you can modify it to save non-useful work. For example, do your laundry once it three days instead of doing it every day.

  1. Reduce your commitments:

Our lives are often too occupied by our commitments at home, work, University or plans with friends, family, or colleagues. Not all these commitments are important to attend to. You should adopt a practice of writing down these things. It can prove to be very eye-opening. Cross out things that do not bring you joy or make you feel good. Decide which errands are worth investing your time and which are not. This can save you a lot of time to spend doing things that you actually love.

  1. Think twice before buying new things:

The easiest way of avoiding clutter is not bringing it home in the first place. Think well before buying new items. Ask yourself if you really need to buy the thing, if your life would be impacted in any way by buying it. Then and only then, decide about shopping.

Cluttering always reflects or reminds us of unfinished business or the past. Holding on to the past will in no way be good for your mental health. You must let go of the past and move forward to improve mental health.
