Understanding Depression Medicine

There are many types of depression medicines. The most popular ones are tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), particularly those with the monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in them. These are known as MAOIs, or multi-antidepressants. What is the best medicine for depression?

Antidepressants, like TCA, have two phases. During the initial phase, they try to balance out the amount of norepinephrine and serotonin in your brain. They are sometimes called “well-balanced” antidepressants. This is to make sure there is a balance between their effects on your mood and how well they work in correcting the underlying chemical imbalances in your brain.

The second phase of these medications tries to raise your serotonin level by prescribing selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These are also called “SSRI” antidepressants. What is the best medicine for depression?

There is a newer drug on the market called Prozac. It has been shown to help in the treatment of depression. It is an SSRI. What is the best medicine for depression? Well, there is only one medicine class: SSRIs.

SSRIs work by attaching to the serotonin receptors and keeping them open. This allows more serotonin to enter your brain and helps alleviate your depression. The other name for this is “Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors”. So, which is better?

Using SSRIs is the preferred method because of the ease of taking them. You just take them once a day. Some people find it easier to just consume the pill and to wait for it to do its thing. There are other options as well. Let me tell you about them.

Your doctor can prescribe another type of depression medication known as Pamelor or Remoxil. This is another class of medication that has been proven to be helpful. However, it has some unpleasant side effects such as nausea, drowsiness, blurry vision, upset stomach, and even problems with weight loss. It does not work like Prozac or Paxil and can be used as an outpatient treatment. You will have to use it exactly as directed for three to six months. It is best to check with your physician to determine if it is right for you or if you should switch to an alternate treatment.

So, which depression medicine is best? As I mentioned earlier, your physician is probably the most knowledgeable when it comes to choosing the right treatment for your depression. He or she will know which medications will ease your symptoms the best. If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to contact him or her for more information.

The second choice is to turn to an over-the-counter (OTC) form of depression medicine. These are generally available at your local pharmacy and are relatively inexpensive. The most common drugs are Serzone and Effexor. They are known for their ease of use and relatively low side effects.

Another choice is prescription strength medication. This is the choice most often made by doctors when treating severe cases of depression. Of course, there are risks involved with these types of medications such as problems with digestion, drowsiness, muscle spasms, and weight gain. Some antidepressants are also prescribed for children who are extremely depressed.

You may have seen commercials for newer antidepressants that claim to be a natural cure for depression. Don’t believe these claims. They simply claim to alleviate symptoms without any side effects. While it is true that some people can choose to use natural depression medicine to relieve symptoms, these are a small percentage of the population.

If you are someone who feels that you are suffering from depression and nothing seems to help, you may want to consider talking to your doctor about prescribing antidepressants. This will help to alleviate the symptoms of your depression but the medications themselves can have some serious side effects. Your doctor will be able to advise you about all the pros and cons of prescription depression medicine.

Prescription depression medicines are typically only prescribed for people who have extreme cases of depression and who fail to respond to conventional treatment options. There are other forms of depression medicine available for those who don’t have as severe of a problem.

The great thing about depression medicine is that it is not something that you have to continue on for the rest of your life. As you are getting better, your doctor may recommend that you reduce your dose or stop taking the medication altogether. This gives you the freedom to effectively treat your depression. However, in order to be completely healthy you should always follow your doctor’s orders. It is possible that your doctor will lower your dosage once you have been feeling better and you have become more stabilized.
